The funds in Hong Kong and Taiwan are governed by their respective boards who share our vision in nurturing young entrepreneurs and graduates.
Bernard Charnwut Chan is a deputy to the National People’s Congress of China, a non-official member of Hong Kong’s Executive Council (2004-09 and from 2012) and (from 2017) the Convenor of the Non-Official Members of the Executive Council. He is also a former member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (1998-2008).
A graduate of Pomona College in California, he is the President of Asia Financial Holdings and Asia Insurance. He is Chairman of the Hong Kong – Thailand Business Council and an advisor to Bangkok Bank (China) Co. Ltd. He sits on the boards of several local and overseas companies in the financial services and manufacturing sectors. He also joined the governing board of the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund in Hong Kong.
Among his public service activities, he is Chairman of the Hong Kong Palace Museum Ltd., Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Chairman of The Jockey Club CPS Ltd. Advisory Committee, Chairman of the Committee on Reduction of Salt and Sugar in Food and Chairman of the Steering Committee on Restored Landfill Revitalisation Funding Scheme. Past positions include Chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development, Chairman of the Antiquities Advisory Board, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Revitalisation of Historic Buildings, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Judicial Salaries and Condition of Service as well as Council Chair of Lingnan University.
He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2002, and a Commander (3rd Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand in 2004. In 2006, he was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong SAR Government. He has been conferred honorary degrees from Lingnan University, City University of Hong Kong and the Open University of Hong Kong.
He is married and has two children.
Mr. Savio Kwan was the President and Chief Operating Officer of Alibaba Group from 2001 to 2003 and served as Chief People Officer for the year 2004 before stepping down from full-time executive duties and was formerly the Independent Non Executive Director at Alibaba.com since 2008, the listed B2B unit of Alibaba Group, until the company has been privatized in June 2012. During his time at Alibaba, Mr. Kwan saw the company transformed from an internet start-up with just over 150 staffs burning close to US$2M per month into one of the world’s biggest B2B Company with over 2,500 staffs generating over US$5M surplus cash per month.
Mr. Kwan, has 30 years of global management experience, including seventeen years at General Electric and four years as the Managing Director of the China operations of BTR plc, a UK-based Fortune 500 company. Mr. Kwan also served as a board member of the Asia Pacific Advisory Board of York International, a leading global air conditioning system provider and a unit of Johnson Control listed in the New York Stock Exchange.
Mr. Kwan's career includes 17 years of high-level management at General Electric Medical Systems where he had responsibilities for sales, marketing, operations, business development, and establishment of joint venture companies in Asia. Among his accomplishments at GE, Mr. Kwan grew the China Medical business from zero revenues to US$70 million revenues in less than 4 years.
At BTR, Mr. Kwan was Managing Director for the China operations of 8 manufacturing subsidiaries with some US$150M sales which he built through merger and acquisitions in the space of under three years.
In 2005 Mr. Kwan co-founded A & K Consulting with Malcolm Au and serves in the capacity of Partner and CEO. He is also a Visiting Executive Professor of Henley Business School, a unit of Reading University in the UK. He also won the Alumni Achievement Award of the London Business School in 2011.
In January 2014, Mr. Kwan joined the main board of British American Tobacco Group as Non Executive Director.
Mr. Kwan was born in Hong Kong and is a UK national. He pursued an undergraduate diploma at Cambridgeshire College of Technology and received Master of Science degrees from both the London Business School and Loughborough University in the UK.
Mr. Danny T. Chiu is Chairman and CEO of Morrison Express Corp., a leading Asia-based global freight forwarding & logistics company. Mr. Chiu joined Morrison Express in 1995 and has been the driving force behind the continuing transformation of Morrison Express from a regional to a global player.
Prior to joining Morrison Express, Mr. Chiu served as a consultant at The Boston Consulting Group. Currently he is a board member of TransAsia Airways Corp. and WK Technology Ltd. In addition, Mr. Chiu sits on the Board of Visitors of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He was President of Harvard Club of Republic of China in 2012-2014 and President of Harvard Business School Association of Taipei in 2005-2012.
Mr. Chiu received his BSFS in International Economics from Georgetown University and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
Mr. Charles Yen founded in 2006 the not-for-profit Beijing Cradle Program for Asia America Multi Technology Association (“AAMA”), connecting the youth and mentors to support young entrepreneurs in Beijing. Mr. Yen was elected as China’s “Representative of Entrepreneurship for Public Good” in 2009.
Mr. Yen returned to Taiwan in 2011 and started to assist the growth and development of Taiwan’s innovative entrepreneurs. In 2012, Mr. Yen, together with Mr. Hung-Tze Jan, founded AAMA Taipei Cradle Program, connecting entrepreneurs in mobile internet , consumers services ,social enterprise, and internet of things with resources of AAMA in Silicon Valley, Beijing and Pearl River delta. Currently, there are more than 40 mentors and 80 entrepreneurs in the Taipei Cradle Program. Mr. Yen also serves as a board member of Social Enterprise Insights and the principal of iLab, an incubator for social enterprises.
Mr. Yen worked extensively for international accounting and consulting firms in Taiwan, the U.S, and China for nearly 30 years. Mr. Yen is currently the co-founder and principal of AAMA Taipei Cradle Program, director of Social Enterprise Insights, principal of iLab, and independent director of Eslite Spectrum and ANZ Taiwan.
Mr. Yen received his bachelor’s degree from National Cheng Kung University and master’s degree from National Cheng Chi University. Mr. Yen is a certified public accountant, registered in Taiwan and Illinois, USA.
Mr. Joseph Tsai is vice chairman and director of Cathay United Bank, one of the largest private banks with strong market positions in Taiwan, where Mr. Tsai endeavors in setting the long-term development strategies and executing mergers and acquisitions, banking innovation and organizational optimization plans. Mr. Tsai also serves as director of Cathay Life Insurance, executive vice president of Tung Chi Enterprise Co., Ltd., and vice president of the Harvard Club of the Republic of China.
Mr. Tsai received his J.D. from Georgetown University.
Mr. Joe Tsai joined our company in 1999 as a member of the Alibaba founding team and has served as our executive vice chairman since May 2013. He previously served as our chief financial officer and has been a member of our board of directors since our formation.
From 1995 to 1999, Mr. Tsai worked in Hong Kong with Investor AB, the main investment vehicle of Sweden's Wallenberg family, where he was responsible for Asian private equity investments. Prior to that, he was vice president and general counsel of Rosecliff, Inc., a management buyout firm based in New York. From 1990 to 1993, Mr. Tsai was an associate attorney in the tax group of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, a New York-based international law firm. Mr. Tsai serves on the boards of directors of several of our investee companies.
Mr. Tsai is qualified to practice law in the State of New York. He received his bachelor's degree in Economics and East Asian Studies from Yale College and a juris doctor degree from Yale Law School.
Joseph C. TSAI joined Alibaba Group in 1999 as one of the eighteen founders. He served as chief financial officer until May 2013 and is currently the executive vice chairman of the company. Joe oversees Alibaba’s strategic acquisitions and investments. He has been a member of the company's board of directors since its inception, and is a founding member of the Alibaba Partnership, serving on its partnership committee.
Joe serves on the boards of several of Alibaba's investee companies, including Koubei (local services), Ele.me (food delivery), Cainiao Network (logistics) and Magic Leap.
From 1995 to 1999, Joe was a private equity investor based in Hong Kong with Investor AB, the main investment vehicle of Sweden's Wallenberg family. Dr. Allan Zeman, GBM, GBS, JP, is the Chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Group, a major property owner and developer in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong Area, one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist and entertainment districts. The new California Tower at the heart of Lan Kwai Fong which features cues to the Group’s flair for design and attracted the top leisure brands that will take the district to new heights. Dr. Zeman is also the Chairman of the Lan Kwai Fong Association. Lan Kwai Fong Group in recent years, has expanded to various cities in China which include Chengdu and Shanghai. Lan Kwai Fong Chengdu was opened in 2009. The Shanghai Dream Center project is a joint venture between Lan Kwai Fong Group, China Media Capital in China and DreamWorks Animation in the United States. It is a world-class cultural and entertainment lifestyle complex. Its GFA is 475,000 square meters. Dr. Zeman is also the owner of Paradise Properties Group, a property developer in Thailand which includes the award winning Andara Resort in Phuket.
Dr. Zeman serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Sino Land Company Limited, Tsim Sha Tsui Properties Limited, Global Brands Group, Television Broadcasts Limited (“TVB”) and is the Non-Executive Director of Pacific Century Premium Developments Limited, all of which are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Dr. Zeman is also the Non-Executive Chairman of Wynn Macau Limited, a prominent gaming operator in the US and Macau. Dr. Zeman is a director of the “Star” Ferry Company, Limited.
Having lived in Hong Kong for over 45 years, Dr. Zeman has been very involved in government services as well as community activities. He was the Chairman of Ocean Park from 2003 to 2014 and is now the Park’s Honorary Advisor. During his tenor at Ocean Park, Dr. Zeman managed to raise visitor numbers despite the opening of rival Hong Kong Disneyland, making the park more attractive and generating record profits. A 2007 article in Forbes magazine, referred to Zeman as "Hong Kong's Mouse Killer" because of the success that Ocean Park enjoyed.
Dr. Zeman was a member of the Board of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority from 2008 - 2016. He is now an honorary advisor.
Dr. Zeman is an appointed member of the Economic Development Commission of Hong Kong, a Representative of Hong Kong China to the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and also is a Board of Governors of Our Hong Kong Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting the long-term and overall interests of HK.
Dr. Zeman is also a board member of Hong Kong Airport Authority.
In March 2018, Dr. Zeman was appointed by the HKSAR Chief Executive as a member of the HKSAR Chief Executive’s Council of Advisers on Innovation and Strategic Development which aims to provide advice to the Chief Executive on Hong Kong’s strategic positioning in the global and regional contexts and direction of economic development aiming at enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness and growth potential.
In addition, Dr Zeman is a member of the newly established Human Resources Planning Commission (HRPC) which was a new initiative announced in the Chief Executive’s 2017 Policy Address and is chaired by the HKSAR Chief Secretary. It aims at formulating coordinated human resources strategies for developing Hong Kong further into a high value-added and more diversified economy.
Dr. Zeman is a Board of Directors of the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund. This is a HKD1 billion funds which aims to support the aspirations of entrepreneurs who wish to take advantage of the resources offered by Alibaba’s ecosystem in e-commerce, logistics, mobile platforms, cloud computing and financial services.
Dr. Zeman is also a member of the Board of Governors of The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Vice Patron of the Hong Kong Community Chest.
In 2001, Dr. Zeman was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong.
He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2004 and the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2011.
In 2008, Dr Zeman was awarded Business Person of the Year by the Hong Kong Business Awards.
Dr Zeman is a holder of an Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from The University of Western Ontario, Canada. In 2012, he was awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees of Business Administration from City University of Hong Kong and University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong.
Dr Zeman also is a holder of Chinese Nationality since 2008.
Mrs. Cindy Chow joined Alibaba Group in 2007 and has worked in the financial control and planning capacity, most recently as Senior Director of International Finance. Before joining Alibaba, Mrs. Chow has worked in a number of Hong Kong listed companies, specializing in financing and management reporting and planning.
Mrs. Chow is an Associate Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She holds a bachelor degree in Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Mr. Andrew Lee joins the Taiwan Entrepreneurs Fund Limited as Executive Director.
Mr. Lee was the Chief Financial Offer of EnTie Commercial Bank (“EnTie Bank”), a publicly listed bank on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE: 2849) and a portfolio company in the Longreach Group managed private equity fund. In his role as Chief Financial Officer at EnTie Bank from 2007 to 2015, he oversaw the strategic and organizational development, budgeting and reporting, human resources management, information technology services and integrated risk management, and helped turn around EnTie Bank into a modern and highly profitable bank in Taiwan. Mr. Lee served as the spokesman of EnTie Bank and as a member to its management committee, asset and liability management committee, risk committee, and personnel evaluation committee.
Prior to joining EnTie Bank, Mr. Lee was a vice president at the investment banking division of Lehman Brothers Inc., responsible for both the coverage of clients in Taiwan as well as the execution of capital markets and mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”) transactions. Mr. Lee completed various fund raising and M&A transactions for large Taiwanese enterprises in technology, media, telecom, and financial services industries. Mr. Lee also assisted in various leveraged buyouts by international private equity firms.
Mr. Lee received his BA and MBA in finance from National Taiwan University.
